New forum name contest
Accepting name suggestions, voting begins tomorrow.
as you all know thanks to you guys we have grown so rapidly in the few days we've been up that it's time to move to a better hosting method, and with that comes a possible new name. So suggest away, and thank you guys so much for helping make this forum a success. Here's to whatever we call this thing lasting for a long while.

Re: New forum name contest
My suggestion is Socialist Gun Club or socialist gun forum brings those looking for us in web searchs straight to us.

Re: New forum name contest
I started a facebook group for physicsists with guns back in college called the GSU trajectory society. Horrible name in retrospect.

Re: New forum name contest
I think after a few days we'll pull the ideas out of here and start a poll thread for them.
Re: New forum name contest
Taking further submissions through the end of the day, before creating the poll.
Re: New forum name contest
My question is who are you looking to attract and engage? Is it only socialists? Think about where most of us came from and how we found the LGC. We wanted an alternative to Right Wing ideology and politics in discussion of a mutual activity, the ownership of firearms. I know that LGC has left a bad taste in many of your mouths, but just thinking of things dispassionately, you want a name that as another poster said, "will bring the web searches right to this forum". With that you will want a name that people are thinking of as an alternative.
Leftist Gun owners Association?
That was probably lame, but seriously, the name should either be a descriptor of what you want the site and club to be and something to attract people who might casually come in and be interested and open to a different mindset.

Re: New forum name contest
I still agree with the basic LGC premise of giving a voice to all gunowners and not just those who adhere to ultraright political philosophies. Thing is, when they failed to live up to that ideal, a lot of us who were not Obama loyalists decided it was time to leave.
I think it is a mistake for a forum with a political agenda, which is what this is, to pretend to be neutral to advocates of political policies that contradict their own. My take on this forum is that it can tolerate someone who is interested in learning something about socialism/ anarchism, but ultimately acolytes of the barely regulated free market advocated by the modern Democratic Party should be encouraged to move on. Ultimately there can be no tolerance for a pro- capitalist stance here- a stance that directly contradicts our core beliefs. This intolerance for capitalism and the apologists for imperialism should be central to this forum.
That should be in our mission statement. It would be free of the hypocrisy of the LGC statement, which was impossibly noble ( liberals love impossibly noble things ).
Exclusivity isn't always a weakness. I would like the forum to remain small ( i.e. managable ) so members can vote on most of our policies.
Now Caliman, I get what you are saying from a marketing standpoint. I just wanted how I felt about who should be a member put out there. And a reminder: this is my POV, not the forum's at large.

Re: New forum name contest
I'm of two minds over it. If we aren't looking for specifically socialist/anarchist gunowners, and we put out a name that gets a wider variety of people, then every single week we'll be fighting the same ideological battles with new people. Every week we'll be explaining how no, socialism didn't kill 100 million people in the 20th century. Every week we'll be explaining how no, we're not trying to take the money from white people and give it to blacks and hispanics, on and on. Sure, those same people would want to have the same fights if they found us by any other way, but at least they'd be less likely to look for something directly socialist.
Either way, this is a democracy. The suggested names will go up for a vote, and the winner will be the name. It won't be a marketing decision but a democratic one.

This. The only capitalists that will listen and reason are the ones that will seek us out, as the few here, have done.Progurt wrote:I'm of two minds over it. Re: New forum name contest
Fair enough. There is nothing wrong with exclusivity other than it slows down any movement you want to make towards capturing and educating a wider audience. However, if that is not what you are looking for then something that denotes the Socialist nature of the group and forum is apropos. As I said in my introduction, I don't consider myself a socialist, though I have those leanings. I have honestly not studied the system(s) enough to really say, "yes, that is exactly what I want for society". That said, I definitely do not align with capitalism in the sense that profit and control of resources is what I find important. If that were the case, I would definitely not have chosen social service as a profession.
I am in no ways trying to influence the decision merely to understand the goal of the group and hence the naming process for the group. Democratic process is great although, I would ask, "who is a member of the group?". Who gets to vote on the name?
Just as an aside: I would probably abstain from voting even if I was considered a member just because I feel you guys who originally started the forum have more of a stake in the title, but that is just a personal feeling of mine not a comment on the site or the group.

Re: New forum name contest
The way I see it, especially with the multiple voting thing I have set up, is that anybody who is a registered member of the site can have a say in the name, and it's a fair say. No one person will drown out anyone else. I don't want to set up an elite, set up different classes of users, except beyond ordinary moderators and site administrators.
Re: New forum name contest
I agree with this new club and it's stance. I support the notion. I joined because I get it and I agree. Also, because it's the only way to keep in touch with these friends which had been taken away out of my control. At the same time, I remember all the times I've made mistakes, misjudgments and statements I wish I could take back after learning more in the end. I'd like to have my own identity, but I'd like to find like minded people I can share it with. Catch 22? I feel like if the people who made an offense or bad judgement would come forward in an effort to revitalize the values we promote, there could be unity, or atleast an understanding and less a seperation. But some things are what they are. And sometimes taking responsiblity for our shames are too embarressing. I'm not sure what the fuck I'm trying to say. My eyes are blury. Fuck Monday. Name- "Socialshizm Bang"

Soooo I hear y'all are looking for a new place to set up shop. I've got a domain and such for wartornonline already and can support a forum easily. Also adding another domain is cheap and easy and I wouldn't mind fronting the cash. Only thing is I wouldn't be able to set it up for just over two weeks if y'all can wait that long and want to do that.

Thanks and not quite home yet, still got a couple more weeks but I'm out of the shit for now. Just get me a name and what you want the domain to be and I'll set it up when I get back. I'll pop in every once in awhile as I'm in transit and getting shit together to leave.
Oh yeah, and I agree we should find a name more neutral. We can use meta tags to get people here for "Socialist Gun Club" and the like without that being the name. Plus less eyes on by unsavory sorts.

An ideal place to make the case for which names should be chosen would be here.MilSpecGI wrote:Thanks and not quite home yet, still got a couple more weeks but I'm out of the shit for now. Re: New forum name contest
I removed the vote-less "Progressive Projectiles", and added "Socialist Rifle Society", reflecting this.
